Where it actually comes from
It's scrambled Latin — lifted from a 45 BC philosophical text by Cicero, De finibus bonorum et malorum — that 1960s typesetters repurposed as filler because it reads as plausible-looking text without meaning anything, which stops readers from getting pulled into evaluating the words instead of the layout. It stuck around through desktop publishing and never really left design and web work.
Why not just use real words
- Meaningful text pulls reviewer attention toward wording and away from typography and layout, which is the opposite of what you want at the mockup stage
- It sidesteps arguments about copy before the design itself is even approved
- Length is predictable, which matters when you're specifically testing how a layout handles overflow or varying content length
- Nothing real or private ends up in a screenshot that gets shared in a deck or a public demo
Where it stops being useful
The moment you're testing usability — can someone actually find and understand the information on this page — filler text is worse than useless, because participants need real content to react to. Same goes for accessibility passes with a screen reader, and for any review where content quality itself is being judged alongside the design. At that point you need actual draft copy, even if it's rough, not Latin filler.
If you want something less obviously fake
There are domain-specific placeholder generators floating around — legal-flavoured lorem for law firm sites, medical-flavoured for healthcare UIs — and a fair number of teams have moved to writing real (if rough) content from day one instead, on the theory that actual content constraints should be shaping the layout from the start rather than being bolted on afterward.
