What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is placeholder text derived from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical work by Marcus Tullius Cicero written in 45 BC. The text was scrambled and repurposed by typesetters in the 1960s to fill printed layouts without distracting readers with meaningful content. It became the standard placeholder text in the desktop publishing era and remains universal in design and web development today.
Why Use Lorem Ipsum Instead of Real Content?
- Focus on design — Readable text distracts reviewers from evaluating layout, typography and visual hierarchy
- Avoid premature content decisions — Placeholder text prevents stakeholders from fixating on wording before design is approved
- Consistent length — Generates predictable text lengths for testing responsive layouts and overflow handling
- Privacy — Safe to use in screenshots, presentations and public demos without exposing real user data
When NOT to Use Lorem Ipsum
Lorem ipsum is not appropriate for usability testing — test participants need realistic content to evaluate whether information is findable and understandable. It's also not suitable for SEO-focused content reviews, accessibility audits (screen reader testing needs real content), or final client presentations where content quality is being evaluated alongside design.
Alternatives to Lorem Ipsum
For specialised design contexts, consider industry-specific placeholder text: legal lorem for law firm websites, medical lorem for healthcare UIs, tech lorem for SaaS products. Some designers prefer using actual draft content from day one — a practice known as content-first design — arguing that real content constraints should drive layout decisions from the start.
